Experience Summary
I graduated summa cum laude from the University of South Carolina at Beaufort with a BA in English Language and Literature in 2008. Since then, I have worked as a tutor both in-school and online. During the spring of 2009, I worked as a 5th grade tutor in Language Arts and Math at a Title 1 elementary school in North Charleston, SC. Since the fall of 2009, I have worked as an online writing lab tutor for Smarthinking, Inc. I review and make editing suggestions for all types of essays on a time constraint. I currently serve as a volunteer for the Buncombe County Literacy Council, and I work with a man who is trying to pass the Writing portion of the GED so he can go to college.
Teaching Style
I believe in a direct, hands-on approach to learning. The main issue many children (and adults) face with learning new material is understanding how the information is applicable to them. I believe in contextualizing information to fit a student's interests and passions so that they are capable of learning a concept that they can then apply to other areas of their life. I engage students through questions, examples, and open conversation.
