Experience Summary
As a wildlife biologist for 15 years, I spent a good portion of my career giving presentations to a wide variety of audiences and educating people one-on-one about environmental issues. I have both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees. I recently underwent a program through the Department of Higher Education to become certified to teach 7-12th grade science. I student taught 9th and 10th grade and have been substitute teaching at all grade levels. Because of my education and career, I am knowledgeable in many math subjects, biology, physical science, grammar, reading, and botany.
Teaching Style
Every child has his/her own learning style. I think it is important to first determine how each child best learns – either visual, auditory, or tactile. I can then tailor my instruction to the needs of each student. In general, I believe that people learn best by ‘doing’. I believe that students should be able to ask questions or discuss relevant experiences during lessons – this kind of dialogue makes the instruction memorable and meaningful to students. The key to one-on-one instruction is patience and understanding of the child’s needs. Little in life is as rewarding as when a child says, ‘Oh, NOW I get it’.
