Experience Summary
I have earned BS, MS, & PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering. This accomplishment required a broad fundamental knowledge of mathematics, chemistry and engineering. Opportunities for teaching, mentoring and tutoring arose during the attainment of my PhD and in the subsequent three-decades of my engineering career. Because I was in a management role during much of this period, I developed strong oral and written communication skills. These knowledge bases and skills have served me well during “post-retirement” in teaching and tutoring college level math, mentoring grade school students, and assisting instruction of both youth and adults in the fundamentals of martial arts.
Teaching Style
I believe in the value of one-on-one tutoring, and I actively listen to the student’s questions and responses to uncover any barriers to the understanding of a problem. I depend upon regular review at the beginning of each session to both assess the student’s progress and grade my own effectiveness as a tutor and mentor.
I also employ real-life examples to aid in understanding as I have found that most young people learn and retain far more when practical applications are used to reinforce theory and practice.
Finally, in addition to improving grades and preparing for the next level of education, my goal is to equip the student with tools for continued success.
