Experience Summary
I have a Bachelors Degree in Geology anda Masters Degree in organic chemistry. I was a teaching assistant in graduate school for both general and organic chemistry. After graduate schooI I worked at Pfizer for 18 years as a chemist. In this position I was responsible for the design and synthesis of many novel compounds and read the chemistry literature extensively. As I gained experience I mentored and advised younger colleagues. I’ve been told by many people that I explain things in an understandable manner.
Teaching Style
My ultimate aim would be to teach the student how to successfully learn on his own. I would first determine the set of circumstances unique to each student. For example, are they far behind their class or just having problems grasping some concepts? I would modify my teaching style depending on the situation, but in general I identify facts that need to be memorized and concepts that need to be understood. We would work through material, in a textbook, for example. Finally the student must apply logic and related skills (algebra, for example) needed for problem solving. Problem solving ties facts and concepts together and brings a deeper comprehension of and familiarity with the subject.
