Experience Summary
As a graduate of Southwestern University with a Bachelor in English and Communications, I was drawn to the field of education. I come from a family of teachers. After earning a post-baccalaureate certification in Secondary Education with a focus on English/Language Arts, I taught for a couple years and wanted to expand my teaching to younger students as well. I am also certified in elementary k-6 instruction. My passion and specialization are in reading instruction, literature, grammar, and composition. During the past ten years, I have tutored AP English, ESL students and parents, elementary students, and middle school students who wanted to improve their reading, speaking, test taking, and writing abilities.
Teaching Style
I adhere to Gardener's Multiple Intelligences, which states that each student possesses certain intelligences and that using a students' strengths improves their achievement. Each student has individual needs, that when nurtured, will allow the student to realize his potential. Students learn differently in different environments, and as an educator, I believe a student learns best when in a comfortable environment, especially with new or challenging material. Most importantly, it is my goal to help students become individual learners and thinkers, to teach them not only content but how to help themselves as well. As a teacher, I had high expectations for all my students, and they reached them when we set manageable goals.
