Experience Summary
During my time as an undergraduate I spent time mentoring kids with anger management issues and for drug rehab at the Police Athletic League's Teen Center in Palm Bay. I did that for over a year. I also interned as a paraprofessional counselor at one of the largest treatment centers for ADHD at The State University of New York at Buffalo. When I started my career in the healthcare undustry I started in training nurses how to administer vaccines and ended up teaching doctors about new pharmaceuticals. In between this I spent some time at Patrick Air Force Base teaching classes on PTSD and Wellness Programs. Recently I have spent a lot of time at Keiser University tutoring students in difficult subject areas.
Teaching Style
My teaching style starts with finding out what the student knows and what is the best way they learn. Not everyone learns the same way and it is hard for students to ask for help. What I find to be the most successful in teaching and mentoring is to learn more about the student and use real life examples that interest them to teach them the material that they need to learn. Also, reading their cues on when they are bored and need more of a challenge, or are in need of me slowing down and more of a review is also important. It is the time spent in tutoring that can really change a students life because before this point they felt helpless. With my background in psychology my approach is more individualized for the needs of the student.
