Experience Summary
I worked as a full-time instructor of physics, astronomy, and engineering/electronics last summer for Upward Bound, a program that provided additional classwork and guidance to selected high-schoolers who came from low-income families that never before sent a kid to college. I also have one and a half years of experience tutoring introductory physics to early college-level students. I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring high school and college students, but I am also willing to work with younger students.
I write fantasy and science-fiction short stories and novels and have strong language skills, so I can proofread papers (in English and Spanish) and help at any point in the writing process.
Teaching Style
Physical science and math are often the most difficult subjects for students, but I believe anyone can understand the "basic idea." The difficulty comes from attempting to connect their intuitive understanding with the symbols on the paper.
Many students think of these subjects as the memorization of formulas. But if they grasp the "basic idea," they can adapt and apply it to any problems they face. Instead of developing a toolbox of formulas, my goal as a teacher is to help the student develop a toolbox of problem-solving strategies. I learn where a student has strengths and exploit these strengths as a pathway to connecting the tangible and abstract, the "basic idea" and the mathematical symbols.
