Experience Summary
As a graduate of a selective liberal arts college with a BA in East Asian Studies, Magna Cum Laude, I am driven to achieve excellence in my endeavors. I specialized in international studies focusing on Asia, especially Japan and China. I studied Japanese intensively and studied abroad in Japan for 11 months. During that time I lived with two host families and in an international dorm while attending intesive Japanese classes at Nanzan University's Center for Japanese Studies. I have tutoring experience in English, Japanese, and Spanish. I am a native Spanish and English speaker. I also have specialized knowledge of environmental science and climate change.
Teaching Style
In the early sessions I ask my students a lot of questions to figure out their goals, problems, current knowledge and learning style. Based on what I find I build a teaching strategy. I then help them find appropriate materials if they don't already own some.
I try a few methods to find the one that works best. If I'm teaching a language I like to combine grammar, vocabulary building exercises, as well as speaking and listening. I give them small quizzes to measure their progress. I help them find fun level-appropriate reading and listening materials. I give them sources online and information on what types of dictionaries are useful. I give them my email and tell them to contact me if they ever have any questions.
