Experience Summary
As a foster parent, I tutored our first child as he progressed through kindergarten and the first grade. His previous school experience was lacking at best, and he had little confidence in his scholastic ability. I was able to pinpoint his natural aptitude--mathematics--and use it to help not only boost his self-esteem regarding academics, but also to tailor my approach to his other subjects as well. Since math is very much tied to logic, using logical constructs to aid him in his critical thinking proved fruitful in showing him how to solve problems regarding tasks such as alphabetization, grammar, and spelling, among others.
Teaching Style
Each individual has a unique approach to critical thinking, and using that approach is the best way for that person to learn. I make every attempt to identify a person's perspective so as to shape my teaching for that person in the best possible way. Whether someone is visual-, aural-, logical-, or otherwise-oriented makes a significant difference in the way that person will respond to new information. Above all, I remain positive in my approach, because I realize that every success requires an amount of trial and error behind it, and that nobody is born into their skills though everybody has talent.
