Experience Summary
I have experience as both a teacher and a tutor. I graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in English/Secondary Education. Throughout my years in college I learned theories of education, observed in classrooms and student taught at both the middle school and high school level. After graduating college in 2003, I taught 9th grade English for 2 years in a charter school in Houston, TX. After I relocated to Chicago, IL, I entered the corporate sector; however, I continued to volunteer as a tutor for 2 years. Given my past experiences, I have had the opportunity to work with students at many different levels and have tutored in various subject areas.
Teaching Style
I have always been a believer in giving students a foundation from which to learn and grow. I enjoy teaching students basic skills that can be applied to many different subject areas. For example, I think things like test-taking skills, communication skills, and problem-solving skills are all things that can transfer between subject areas and even outside of the classroom. I think it is also empowering for students to help one another. The best way to learn something is to teach it. This not only builds confidence, but it helps students retain information.
