Experience Summary
During my time as a graduate student in Organic Chemistry at UW-Madison, and my time as an instructor at UW-Whitewater, I have taught a wide variety of courses to a wide variety of students. I have taught Organic Chemistry Laboratory, General Chemistry Lecture and Laboratory, as well as a Chemistry for the Consumer Lecture and Laboratory, which is a course for non-science majors. This variety in courses has given me experience in teaching a variety of students. Not everyone learns in the same way or at the same pace. I have developed the ability to describe concepts in different ways such that a student can find what works the best for them.
Teaching Style
Knowing that all students learn in different ways, I do my best to provide multiple ways of teaching concepts that students find difficult. I believe in inquiry based learning. While some student’s questions require a direct answer, others can more effectively be answered with a question. I try to find ways to redirect a student’s lack of understanding in a direction that they do understand, and then build upon that knowledge to fill in the gaps they may have. This builds on a student’s ability to think through problems and develop the ability to problem solve on their own which is what they would have to do in the classroom.
