Experience Summary
I enjoy helping students improve their writing skills. In college, I majored in print journalism. I was an editor at a student newspaper for about six months. In addition to assigning articles and posting articles on the Internet, I mentored other journalism students. I helped them improve their style and grammar.
After graduating, I began work at a weekly newspaper. I started out as a news and feature writer, but was promoted to a news and copy editor after several months. I advised and edited the work of three writers. Although my work experience is specifically in journalism, I also enjoy helping students with other writing assignments like essays and short stories.
Teaching Style
I work well with students one on one. This setting gives me an opportunity to recognize individual needs. I am a caring, patient person who is considerate of other people’s feelings. I give constructive suggestions and refrain from belittling. I believe in a simple approach to writing. I often use outlines to help students stay on track and organize their thoughts. I help them cut out material that detracts from their message. I look at general themes and flow, as well as word choice and grammar. My goal is to help students make their work better, while still maintaining their individual style and ideas. I enjoy working with young children, teenagers and young adults.
