Experience Summary
After graduating from Rhode Island College in 1976 with a B.A. in Secondary Education and major in Biology, I took a teaching job at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, MA. Here I taught classes in Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science for 5 years. I then returned to Rhode Island College where I earned a Master of Arts degree in Biology with specialization in Microbiology. During my graduate work I assisted in the laboratory sections of their General Biology and Microbiology courses. Upon graduation, I took a job at the University of Rhode Island in the Microbiology department and, after 2 years, started a new career in the Diagnostics industry where I remained for 22 years before being laid off.
Teaching Style
I enjoy working with students and helping them learn what can sometimes be difficult concepts in the scientific disciplines. I believe that all students have the ability to understand these concepts if they are presented in ways that they find interesting. I like to use multiple techniques when teaching, including the use of computer programs such as PowerPoint to show diagrams, pictures, graphs and short videos to illustrate the key points and concepts involved in a lesson. I like to challenge the students with questions and exercises that focus on these key points. I believe that a good educator will be able to motivate students by making the lessons interesting and by relating the lesson to real life experiences.
