Experience Summary
I have Bachelor's Degrees in English & Spanish, a Master's Degree in English, and am rated 'advanced low' on the Arabic Oral Proficiency exam. My Spanish training includes 42 college level credit-hours, as well as a semester studying in Mexico. I have tutored language for native and non-native speakers on high-school and college levels. I also taught the high school curriculum, including Social Studies, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Physical Science, English and Geography to a class of JobCorps candidates who had been failing students, many with special learning needs, and helped all of them to graduate with diplomas within 5 months. I am self-taught and proficient on all MS applications, plus HTML-, CSS-, PHP- and Java-based design.
Teaching Style
I'm most interested in tutoring on the high-school or college level, but I do have experience teaching young children as well. I believe that the biggest impediment to learning a subject is anxiety, often from a bad classroom experience, so my approach focuses on beginning at the learner's level and making sure to check every concept before moving on to the next one. This works. I offer a patient, learner-focused teaching style that is able to use a broad variety of examples and experience from everyday life and my experience to illustrate points. I'm practiced in complementing a primary teacher's style to fill in gaps and get results. I have an enthusiasm for language that, I am told, is infectious.
