I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. My approach is to help the student understand what each problem requires and to devise a “plan of attack” to solve the problem. I try to help the student avoid the notion that “every problem is a new problem,” but instead to look for patterns and similarities to problems they have already successfully solved. I also encourage the student to keep working on basic arithmetic skills and to work review problems from previous units in order to sharpen their techniques.
