My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have a Masters in Poetry from the University of Michigan, where I was awarded a Zell Postgraduate Fellowship and was a semi-finalist for the Thoerdore Roethke Hopwood Award. My collection of poems, Point of Sand, was awarded the Michigan Writers Chapbook Award in 2009. In addition to spending my summers on the Creative Writing Faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts where I teach high school poetry majors, I currently teach in the English department at the University of Michigan.

I had a wonderful teacher once who quoted a line from a Richard Brautigan book that went, "My teachers could easily have ridden with Jessie James for all the time they stole from me." He told us about making a promise to himself, when he began teaching, that he would never be the sort of teacher a student could say this about. I made the same promise when I began teaching. I have been blessed with some tremendous, inspirational teachers, and, like most of us, I have also had the lousy ones (the ones who admire test scores above creativity, who stack their bookshelves with textbooks instead of poems and stories, who prefer power to respect). Easy-going and very easy to relate to/understand

Employed at Oakland Community College 2010-2011. I have been a tutor at OCC since 2010, but have had a lot of private experience prior. My methods are very effective, yet unconventional. This serves both you and me very well because I like what I do and you get the knowledge you're seeking. I can always understand a student's individual needs because I have been around such a large variety of learning styles. Also, I believe that a "set" lesson plan is worthless for English because who's to say that everyone with a specific problem is not understanding it for the same reason? One person may not understand the use of paragraph formation for a completely different reason than the next.
