I believe that students need to be challenged. When they are highly challenged, they really produce. In my tutoring experience, my students' test scores rose two grade levels in ten weeks because they were challenged. Previously, these students were thought to not be able to speak, read, or write English, and were pre-testing at very low grade levels.
For the first three years out of the university, I was a school librarian, and was board certified K-12 by the Washington State Board of Education as a result of this experience. From 2006-2008, I have been tutoring writing at Northern New Mexico College, from 4th grade remedial level through college papers in all subjects. I am presently working in an Upward Bound program for 9th graders, to help increase their study skills.

My philosophy for effective education is comprised of six components creativity, character, culture, civic capacity, shared governance and student centeredness. I believe student centeredness is the trunk and the other components are the branches. Each component is connected to the other and they share common characteristics. For me teaching is about making the connection for students between the literature, writing, piece of art or media and their lives. A Little Bit About Me...

My style of teaching, especially with tutoring, is to find out what kind of learner my student is: tacit, oral, or verbal. Then the lesson style can be geared to that, while leading the student to become more aware of the other abilities and options. Also, it is imperative that students understand why they are learning what is being presented to them. Cause and effect leads to greater awareness and more objective, analytical, and critical thinking. I believe that in order for students to obtain knowledge, they must develop some level of interest in the subject. As a teacher, I try to understand the student's mind in order to present the material in such a way that it will fit together with the student's preexisting knowledge. If a student is passionate about sports or video games, I try and use examples and metaphors from those respective areas within the lessons.
