My comments on tutoring Life Science : As a tutor in the college-prep after-school program Upward Bound,I helped students understand Chemistry concepts for 7 years, and know where the basic pitfalls are. I have also taught Plant Science at the college level

I start by giving a diagnostic test to assess each student's proficiency in the basics of Arithmetic and Algebra: fractions, decimals, percentages and the interconversion between them, and the rules of working with signed numbers. This approach stems from the notion that without these basics, Math is an uphill climb for most students. I place more emphasis on full work than answers.
I taught college-level Plant Science for 14 years. I spent 7 years as a tutor of Math and Science at the college-prep after-school program Upward bound, helping students with homework and preparing them for the ACT and the SAT. I am currently employed as a Math tutor at a local technical college where I help students with Basic Math, Intro Algebra,Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Trig and Elementary Statistics.

I believe all students can learn and use my training and experience to adapt my teaching strategies to individual learning styles. Using student interests can help direct teaching that improves students’ enjoyment of learning. For instance, when teaching reading to boys I have found that they often like to read more factual reading material about sports, science, history, mechanics, etc. Student interests change as they get older and reading material needs to be age appropriate. Students thrive on positive re-enforcements, but the best motivation is personal success. Finding ways for students to feel needed and appreciated, helps to find learning more relevant and worthwhile.

My teaching style consists of instructing through personal experiences and relating of importance of subject material to life in general. I am compelled to teach because I am very curious by nature and enjoy sharing concepts and ideas with others as they are exposed to new material. I consider my teaching style to be flexible and always searching to answer the question, "what is the students particular learning style like?" Thus, I tend to drift toward and match up my teaching style with the learning style of the student. This method is short on lecturing and long on collaboration while looking for the qualities of accuracy, organization, thoroughness, directness, judgement, and expression.
My teaching experience consists of two recent years of substitute teaching in Watertown, Delano, Mound and Orono public school districts. I taught as a long term science substitute at Olson ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I want each of my students to reach their full potential, and have some fun along the way. The experience of twenty-three years in the classroom has taught me a great deal about how to address a wide range of skills and abilities in students. I know that some students learn better using auditory means, while others learn more visually, or that some are linguistic learners, some spatial learners, and some learn through body kinesthetics. I would need to know how the students in my care learn best, and then structure a curriculum to fit those needs. Conferring with parents would be an invaluable tool to assist me in my teaching.
I am different from most teachers in the fact that I have 23 years of teaching experience, spread throughout grades 1-8. I also have a unique background in Early Childhood Education, having spent one year at the St. Cloud State Campus Lab School’s Preschool, ... read more

This past year I graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College with a Bachelor’s in History and Medieval Studies. I have studied abroad at Oxford University, and in Rome and Romania, and have a lot of experience in writing research reports and essays. As a student of the liberal arts I have studied a wide variety of subjects, from theology to environmental science, from Old English to statistics and am comfortable in almost any subject. During this past academic year I tutored a home schooled child one on one several hours a week in world history and research methodology; I was in effect his sole teacher in the subject and also helped him improve his writing and study skills. For the past four years I have taught chess to children aged six to ten, emphasizing analytical skills.

My nine years of teaching and two years of volunteer teaching experience have finely honed my ability to relate to students and help them to understand concepts in a wide variety of subjects. My first experience tutoring was in 8th grade when my 6th grade math teacher asked me to help some of his struggling students. I greatly enjoyed the experience and wanted to continue. I didn't get another chance to tutor until my freshman year of college. I volunteered to help a young man who could not take notes for himself. As the semester progressed, he asked for my help in understanding the material, so I began informally tutoring him in Biology. I also had the opportunity to tutor a young student in Short Calculus. Most currently I have been teaching a lab section at the University of Minnesota. The class is about 18 students and meets once a week for 3 hours.
I am a very motivating teacher. I encourage my students to strive to do their best with the philosophy that they will be amazed at what they can accomplish. I try to get my students excited about the maaterial b ... read more
