I have spent the last two years in college and have gained my associates degree in ASL. I aspire to become a teacher of ASL at the high school level. I enjoy signing and aim to share my enjoyment with others learning the language. I don't pretend to be perfect at it nor will I expect others to be so. We all learn at different paces and different ways. This skill takes time just as much as any other. My instructors have encouraged me to push myself and learn as much as I can.
I prefer to instruct by example. I found that with sign watching and repeating work best. I like to work with the person at their pace. Running through the material as fast as possible helps no one.

Educator for 17+ years seeking to help with our tomorrow!

I'll be honest. My "students" from the past have told me that during the time when I was actually sitting down and tutoring/working with them, they didn't even notice that they were actually doing the work. What I do when I try to make the "students" learn is to make them see what the books are trying to say to them through what we see through our eyes, in our world, every day. For example, if the book says: 7 - x = 4, I would be telling the child/adult, "Imagine if you had 7 dollars in your hand." I would then ask them, "How many do I need to take away (subtract) for you to have 4 dollars?" When working with the lower kids, I even use the actual objects and lay them on tables in front of me and show to them so they don't have to use their imagination to figure it out. Or if the page has picture on it, just cross them out if subtracting, or draw more if adding.

Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I have been in many American Sign Language classes. Get lots of experience talking to many Deaf people, such as my sister. Working towards becoming an Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I can have full conversations with a Deaf person.

I have used sign language since I was about 13 years of age and it became a passion of mine. I took many American Sign Language classes, to which almost all my professors are Deaf. I have gone to many Deaf events with my sister. I have been working towards becoming a Sign Language Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. When I am at home doing nothing, I will sit and sign the conversations of tv shows, or to music or I will practice all the signs I know.

My comments on tutoring Sign Language : I was introduced to American Sign Language when I was in the 4th Grade. Which then later became a passion of mine, because I was intrigued. As in right now I've taken College courses at a community college. I've taken multiple college courses including ASL-1 and I am now currently in ASL-2

I've know sign Language since the 4th grade, but as in right now I am a senior in High School taking college classes in American Sign Language, which it will lead to my career to becoming an Interpreter. American Sign Language Mentor/Tutor

I think it is always important to learn what the client wants from the tutoring experience and go from there. For potential interpreters I have developed several linguistic building exercises and other challenging material. For parents of Deaf children I can help lead you to resources as well as language advancements. It seems to me that everyone can learn, in different ways and at different times. My approach is to have several options of which approach will be successful. Being a 1:1 teacher allows me the freedom and time to work with a student on a concept in a number of ways until the cognition sets in for him. Being enthusiastic and excited about the learning experience is contagious. I always think about the teachers who were indifferent compared to the ones who were animated.
