A Little Bit About Me...

As I am still a student myself, I bring a slightly unique perspective to tutoring. I know and appreciate the importance of a compelling instructor, who is both enthusiastic and intelligent, but also patient and understanding. I love the sciences, but I have not been working in the field for so long as to not remember the frustration most students feel when first grasping the founding principles. I strongly believe that learning is best facilitated through problem solving rather than rote memorization, especially within the sciences. Asking questions is far more important than answering them, and engendering a genuine interest in learning is paramount above all else.

In college, I tutored grammar school, high school and college students in various math and science courses. Subjects included algebra, calculus, chemistry, and physics. In graduate school, I trained graduate, medical and high school students in various lab techniques and concepts. I also played a large role in managing their laboratory projects. It was at this point that I decided I wanted to become a teacher. After graduating, I became a substitute teacher and also co-instructed an online course for my undergraduate college. Because of my experience in teaching my own children, I have discovered that no child is too young to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four. My teaching style is to engage the student on a personal level through cheerful conversation and sharing of interests, then to assess learning styles, strengths, and challenges.
