Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a PhD in Zoology from The Ohio State University and over the past 25 years I have taught at Columbus Technical Institute and Portland State University. I have taught courses in General Biology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Ecology and a graduate course in Limnology. At Portland State I was also involved in a research program to improve student outcomes. This project attempted to improve student's experiences in a cost effective manner, establish an infrastructure that helps implement technology, and evaluate the effectiveness of educational technology on student learning.

I have a Masters degree in anthropology (with minors in zoology and philosophy) and a Bachelors degree in zoology (with a chemistry minor) from Oregon State University. I have tutored high school students in math, science, reading, and writing for the Upward Bound program, was a teaching assistant in college biology laboratory and biological anthropology courses at OSU, and later a teacher of bioanthropology at Klamath Community College, OSU (online and on campus) and Western Oregon University. I was laid off in December 2009 due to budget cuts, but continue to present lectures and write scientific literature.
