My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have over 900 articles published with the former "Globe Democrat."

I am a listener first and foremost. I want to know what my students expect from me and in what areas s/he regard as most essential to her/his success. I believe all people can learn and understand. It is a pleasure to watch students grow in skill and comprehension and move toward confidence.
I love teaching. I earned my BA before I was old enough to vote. While my classmates were in his/her senior year, I was teaching. Eventually I earned my M.Ed. in Reading, then started School Administration and Adult Education. My comments on tutoring Journalism : I was on the journalism team all four years of high school, serving as managaing editor, and sports editor, and was the only writer ot be granted free-lance editorial writing. Furthermore, during college and since I've taken my knowledge of pharmacoogy, biochemisry, chemistry, anatomy, etc. and have written several referenced articels for the online health magainze www.mindandmuscle.net under my name Tom Rayhawk

I tutored at the mathew dickey's boys club working with grade school students ranging from the 2nd-4th grade. I would essentially go over all of their subjects with them and ensure that they not only completed their assignments but understood the material. In college at Iowa State University I tutored in both Anatomy & Physiology and Biochemistry. Although I have not worked specifically with students in need of writing skills, essay assignments - I was in journalism and wrote for the high school newspaper all four years and served as managing editor and sports editor. A Little Bit About Me...

I teach each person on an individual level. There are several reasons behind this. Some of them are: people have different strengths and weaknesses, people learn at quicker/slower rates than others, some individuals are more adept at one subject matter than another, and the motivation of the individual varies greatly from person to person. I try to teach by example. I also believe in constructive criticism and use positive reinforcement. I always try to give examples and "paint a picture" so that the person clearly understands the subject being taught. Hands on, discovery, field trips, audio, video, anything I can pull in to teach with is essential to making it the best learning experience that I know how.

Excellence in teaching, I believe, depends less on method and more on the character of the teacher. Since a student is a human being before he or she assumes the role of the learner, it is incumbent upon the teacher to respect the individual, and likewise earn his or her respect, first, well before considering the more technical pedagogical aspects. Along these lines, the teacher must be as good of a listener, must be able to pay the strictest kind of attention to the student, as he or she is an instructor. Intuition and patience are essential. A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Columbia University with a BA in English and political science and spent the four years following graduation working on the communications team for Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City. In that capacity I supervised a staff of five full time employees and a variable number of interns. That experience was helpful in terms of learning to teach and mentoring college-age and post-college individuals.
