My teaching style is learner-centered, constructivist, and practical. I believe that a teacher must get to know her students on a personal level to facilitate the best learning. By ascertaining a student’s current knowledge and beliefs about a particular subject, I am able to help students advance to their fullest potential. If students understand the applicability of a concept or skill, they are much more likely to be engaged in learning it. Thus, I give students as much “real-world” practice as possible, so they can see the value in the subject they are learning. I am most able to tutor students in all aspects of English and language arts, but I can also tutor in the social sciences like history, psychology, sociology, and geography.

I love using different styles of teaching to see which way each individual learns best. I believe all students are capable of learning the same curriculum, but may need to be shown or approached in different ways. With my undergraduate degree in hand I taught Marketing and Sales at Whiteside Area Vocational Center in Sterling, IL, for eight years. I left teaching to enter the corporate world working for several companies, i.e., National Manufacturing Company in Sterling, Amerock Corporation in Rockford, and Greenlee-Textron in Rockford. I moved from a product manager to national account manager. Throughout high school and college I volunteered at a local summer theater workshop for children. In this program I started out as a teen counselor and moved on to be an adult helper and play director. Also, I worked for a summer as a camp counselor for the Freeport Youth Summer Program where I led children in games and some educational programming. In college I acted as an informal tutor and study buddy to classmates.
I enjoy working with children and always have. I feel my teaching style is more in the Socratic method in that I like to ask them questions until they come to the answer themselves because I feel that increases the retention rate of the subject. Additionally, I like to take the concepts that are being taught and give them real world applications and examples to make the learning more relevant.
