I have worked as a speech-language pathologist in two different Texas public school districts, as a home-school administrator, and as a core teacher in the private-school setting. I have taught middle-school language arts and mathematics. With my degree and experience in special needs and learning differences, I served as supervisor/teacher for a special needs program called the Link Lab at Poetry Community Christian School. The Link Lab also provided tutoring for students in the afternoons. I recently moved back to the Shreveport area where I grew up. The major benefit of a one-on-one tutoring environment is that a student can be taught in the manner which best suits their personal learning style. I believe it is imperative to identify a student's preferred learning style and to adapt my teaching accordingly. When working with a student, I prefer to allow the student to work through a problem and discover the answers themselves, while I guide and instruct them, instead of merely showing them. While grades and test scores are obviously important, it is my main goal to increase a student's confidence in a subject.
