A Little Bit About Me...

I have always loved to teach – even as a child in front of a tiny blackboard in my living room, playing school with my sister. Since then, I have continuously sought opportunities to teach outside of my daily school and work life. As an undergraduate at Middlebury College, I volunteered to teach beginning German at a local elementary school. After college, I taught seventh-grade Faith Formation at my church and also led monthly, 3-hour Confirmation preparation classes. My college coursework helped me develop excellent reading, writing, and language skills, but I am also competent in math and could easily tutor that subject on a grade school level.
I believe that a love of school and learning begins with confidence in one's own abilities. Some find it easy, and others need a certain dose of encouragement and guidance to gain that self-assurance. As a tutor, I think it’s important to ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For the 2008-09 school year I was employed in the Connecticut school system in the special education department. There I developed experience tutoring special education students in grades K-6 and worked closely with a myriad of personalities, both adults and children. Additionally, I spent the previous year leading the art department of an influential promotional products firm. I gained experience in customer service and graphic design, and also invaluable knowledge regarding teamwork and juggling multiple tasks. These various facets of my background have enabled me to work well with both children and adults, in special education or otherwise.
I love working with both children and adults and enjoy both the similarities and differences in teaching style required for each. My previous experiences, both in academic and creative fields, have afforded me a great level of patience a ... read more

I specialize in working with students who have behavioral and/or learning issues. Much of my experience has been teaching academically at-risk teens and pre-teens as well as emotionally troubled teens. I believe that part of a tutor's role is to build a student's confidence in the subject area and to make the material relevant so a student will be motivated to learn the subject. I will try to incorporate various mediums (e.g. audio and visual) to approach the subject creatively if a student is really struggling.
My undergraduate major was Writing-in-Education so I began working in New York city schools during college as a playwright's assistant and while studying tracking in elementary schools. I then taught literary arts at a Montessori camp for teens and took classes toward Language Arts teaching certification at Southern Connecticut State University. I have taught high ... read more

As a hardworking individual with excellent communication skills, I would like to explore the possibility of putting my talents and experience to help children. Currently I have a successful and satisfying career with Artwell Gallery, a nonprofit community based art gallery. However I am looking forward to embarking on a new career. I hold a BA in Radio, Television, and Film from Rowan University. For three years I worked in a pre-school teaching Art to students aged three to five.
I had once been told by a very seasoned teacher that "If you can not go through the front door find an open window." She opened my eyes to creative, and interesting ways to stimulate young minds. I love helping children learn, and finding their open window. A great teacher can incorporate different styles of teaching to adapt to a child's learning ability.

I really enjoy teaching because I enjoy seeing the progress with people as they excel in something they thought they would never be able to do. I like working with children because I can make learning fun and interesting to them. I have a lot of experience working with younger children in elementary school all the way up to young adolescents in high school. I have also been a mentor to freshmen in college. My teaching style is very eclectic. I understand that all people learn differently, and I am very open to adapting to the style that works best for them. Ultimately my main goal is to see people succeed and feel good about them selves. Teaching and tutoring comes very natural to me, because I have a lot of patients, and enjoy problem solving with a variety of people.

I am patient and approachable but insist on the value of completing assignments even if the student "hates" them. I am good at explaining how this will be important later, which turns around reluctant learners. I believe in explaining, showing, modelling, and then stepping back while the student tries, explains, and determines where the mistakes come up. I value resiliance, and bask in the joy of competence achieved through effort.
I went from the Boston Public Schools to Commonwealth School and then Wellesley College, and would have been lost, early on, without help from tutors. I majored in English and Russian and work with several communities for whom English is not their first language. I am also a freelance writer and editor and I help my children's friends with their college essays. I work as a substitute teacher with all levels and grades and teach everything but Science and ... read more

I enjoy teaching all types and ages. I understand that not everyone learns the same, and I had many regulars that proved this to be true. I try to make the session as fun and light hearted as possible. I find when the student is comfortable and more at ease, he/she learns much better. I take tutoring seriously, and I truly enjoy helping young students strive to be successful. In large group settings I was able to get interaction and was very effective at helping many people at once. When teaching, or learning something myself, I like to find the simplest and most relative way of thinking of the topic at hand. For complex equations I would find easy things for the students to relate it to.
As an undergraduate, I worked as a College Algebra tutor for two years. This required 3 to 6 office hours a week were students would come to on need basis or if their grade fell below a 70 ... read more
