Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I started tutoring in my teens helping young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders develop English and Math skills as well as speech therapy and public speaking. I tutored my fellow students while attending Carroll Community College in English 101 and 102 as well as Creative Writing. I then moved on to being a one on one with high school students with special needs in the Baltimore area.
I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically learn, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. For kids up to 12 years old, I use a variety of methods and instructional tools such as colorful foam and board books, coloring books, flashcards, posters, videos, audios, and games among others (some materials may be at an extra cost). Puzzles, music, drawing, and physical activity are important in a child’s world of learning through exploration and critical thinking. Kids’ lessons usually start with common vocabulary such as shapes, colors, food, family members, etc. and gradually transition to simple 2-3 word sentences after acquiring a certain amount of vocabulary.

While I was a Rotary Exchange Student – South Africa | 1999-2000, I volunteered to tutor students of various ages every subject, except Afrikaans, and was very pleased with their progress, and enjoyed it.
