My teaching style has evolved over the years to one of guided instruction. My first task is to get to know my student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style and proceed from that platform. I am very patient and encourage a respectful bond between my student and me as the tutor. I believe students perform best when they feel comfortable and accepted in the learning setting. That being said, I require and expect my students to complete assigned tasks and approach the tutoring session with a positive, ready-to-learn attitude. I recognize and highlight all successes while, at the same time, working to resolve any struggles and difficulties encountered in learning the subject matter.

I am a high school special education teacher with a primary focus on ELA. Currently, I co-teach in integrated classrooms, grades 9, 11, and 12, with regular education teachers and we have designed a curriculum focusing on intensive writing to assist our students in passing the NYS ELA Regents. We have a 91% passing success rate for both regular education and special needs students. My strategies with special needs students is designed around their disability and I work with them on “coping” mechanisms to level the playing field to allow them to be successful on exams and in life. I have had experience with individual tutoring of students out on medical leave in my district as well as working with the 21st Century Program which is run through the state on a grant. If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

More About This Tutor...

I spend a lot of time (as much as needed) to make a student grasp concepts. Once concepts are well understood, it becomes easy to solve problems. For this reason, the rate of progress depends on the student's interest and dedication to study. I assume that if a student is willing to pay for tutoring, the incentive to learn will not be lacking. The student's competence improves when the student solves a variety of problems. My objective is to help the student solve problems with minimal assistance, so that the student will excel in school.

I have been teaching for 21 years now (wow, that's gone by fast!) and I love every second of what I do. I have also been a tutor in the district for the past 9 years, tutoring every subject possible--math, English, Social Studies, etc. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to get to know students who don't take French and also I love to teach other subjects outside my own area. Teaching is the best job there is--I get such a great energy from my students every day! I rarely miss a day of school, and I look forward to going in to work every morning. Everyone should be so lucky to have a job they absolutely love!
My teaching style.... depends on the day, depends on the students, depends on the topic. One minute I can be dancing around the room and the next we're having a more serious discussion. My expectations are very high and I always push my students to do "just a bit bet ... read more

As a teacher of urban students and students who have experienced sever trauma (Hillside), I have gained a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by children today such as home environment and poverty. My teaching style is very structured and includes various modes of instruction. I try to utilize cooperative learning strategies when ever possible. Students can learn alot from each other both intellectually as well as socially. To help students to learn the vast amount of vocabulary included in most science curriculums I teach my students to determine word meanings by braking words down into their latin roots or “decoding”. I also like to teach students important study skills as well as test taking strategies.
