As a student of history I tend to emphasize that nothing happens in a vacuum. People and events must be placed in a context. Understanding when and where is an important first step to understanding why, whether the subject be literature, theology, philosophy, or politics. Source materials must be central to any academic undertaking. Every reputable campus has at least one library containing printed resources that are invaluable. Additionally, every student should have access at home to very basic resources such as a dictionary, a thesaurus, and perhaps an encyclopedia. I dread the day that printed material becomes unfashionable.

I first like to understand the student's learning style, as we all have different methods of learning. Some are visual, others do better with reading a text, or using examples. I use a variety of methods to teach my students, depending on age. I also want to learn where and why the student is struggling with the subject. I have always had a strong appreciation for education and learning new things. My educational experience was strengthened when I attended Cornell College, which has a strong liberal arts program. I immediately took an interest in the sciences and pursued a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-medicine. My education was additionally complimented when I immersed myself in several language, mathematic, English, and humanity courses, which gave me a strong diversity in the liberal arts curriculum. Due to the smaller class sizes at Cornell, most of the exams were given in essay form, which strengthened my writing skills immensely.
