My favorite English teacher in college affected me because he focused on my individual strengths and interests, instead of giving cookie cutter instruction. I believe this is essential in teaching, for every student learns in his own particular way. This is especially important in writing: you do not want turn a budding young Hemingway into a James Joyce, or vice versa. I start looking right away for “What is missing?” I have seen many students who are perfectly capable but struggle because they missed a fundamental building block. Learning is always difficult. My teaching style is to listen to what the person needs help with, and then to ask them what they already know about the subject. Next, I will show him or her to solve the problem, then ask him or her to try it himself or herself. If he or she has any questions, I will answer them. However, I think that it is best for the person to learn how to solve the problems with assistance from myself, but not to do all the work myself.
