The best method I have found for relating mathematical and scientific concepts to students has been with a majority of examples. While explaining theory is necessary for a student to gain the basics of a concept it is only through working problems and exercises that a student truly understands the material. When teaching I would usually explain a section of material as best I could, then work through multiple examples that illustrate the material.
