I pay close attention to who i am tutoring because every child learns at a different pace and style and i am able to pick that out and make the tutoring session valuable to each individual. I try to listen as carefully as i can to determine the best way to approach their learning experience i.e. by consulting with the child and the parents to best assess what needs to be done for the highest achievable outcome from this experience.

A Little Bit About Me...

Students learn best from doing things. I try not to lecture, but to involve the student in the learning process. I can lecture, but I haven't found it to be as effective as other methods. I very much prefer tutoring to classroom teaching, mostly because I am helping people learn what they want to learn, and solve problems they are having troubles with.
I have worked part time as an adjunct instructor since the '70s, including 22 years with the Orlando Program of Florida Southern College, and 11 years with Valencia Community College. In my experience, fear and self-consciousness interfere the most with learning. This seems especially true of arithmetic and higher levels of math. I don't believe that children should force themselves to memorize something they don't understand just to please a teacher. It is my job to find a way to make it clear. I try to relate all material to the student's experience. I like to watch carefully until I see a spark, and then enjoy the experience with the student. I believe that the best motivation is to have a teacher accept you and believe that you can do it.
Teaching has been a source of great pleasure for me. While I was working at regular full-time jobs, I usually had a part-time teaching position. Over a period of 16 years, I have taught more than 50 classes at community colleges, four-year colleges and universities. I also tutored children and high school students, ... read more
