Coming from a family of academicians, and a father who has a doctorate in education, I learned to love learning at an early age and have always valued education and try to instill that in others. I am proficient in many areas and work well with all people from all walks of life, at varying levels. My experience comes from being in a helping profession, in which I assisted hundreds of people live up to and achieve their highest potential. Having three children of my own with varying learning styles, as w well as working with other children and adults, enhanced my my ability to understand individuals and how they learn.
I take a non-judgmental approach, and start where the student is at. Putting a client at ease and forming a trusting connection with the tutor, is vital to the ultimate success of tutoring, (as well as competency in the subject matter.)

My comments on tutoring Homework Help : To me, "homework help" means more than just getting the homework done. It means helping students with tough concepts they are not understanding, thus helping them to complete their school work easier.

The process is just as important as the product. If a student can come up with the correct answer, but he or she has no idea how or why it is correct or how they got it, I feel like their learning is incomplete. Especially in Math, but also in many other subjects, concepts build upon each other. For this reason, I like to explain not just *how* to get there, but also *why* we got that answer; then students have a firmer foundation for the trickier concepts. I love seeing the lightbulb "go on," when kids finally "get it."
I have been a teacher for 7 years. I graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a BA in Spanish Translation and Interpretation and English. During my last two years, my Translation and Interpretation professor selected me to translate and interpret for the Buffalo County Diversion Program. Also during college, I tutored college students through the Center for Academic Success in Spanish and helped the students write and edit their paper (all disciplines). My comments on tutoring Homework Help : Homework and study skills are one of my strength areas. I can help you get the most out of your textbook resources, knowing when to ask the teacher for extra help, searching for online help effectively, creating study materials such as note cards, and generally setting up a study routine that works for you.

I prefer personal and small group teaching, but I can also do online tutoring with Webex. I like to get to know my students and their goals. I can help students set those goals, make plans, and achieve. I have lots of experience creating curriculum materials and lessons, and I try to find a real-life application to each lesson.
My career path has winded around quite a bit but always focuses on computer science and math education. My education experience has included tutoring freelance, tutoring on USD's payroll, leading group study sessions, providing supplemental instruction for university coursework, leading workshops at a computer camp, writing workshops for that camp, and ultimately teaching math full time in a high school. My computer science field experience includes several part-time jobs, freelance web development, personal projects, an internship with NASA, and ultimately ... read more

The thing I enjoy most about teaching is seeing a concept "click" in a child's head. I feel that this is possible with all children if the right strategy is used to teach them. Students learn in lots of different ways. I feel it would be my job as a tutor to find out what would work in each student's academic life. Whether it be a more hands-on approach, or simply reading from a book, I find what helps each child to learn most effectively. This, in turn helps them to progress in their endeavors at school.
Throughout my college experiences I was given the opportunity to teach a diverse group of learners. I feel that this has prepared me in my efforts to become a better teacher. In my field based experiences and student teaching I learned about new approaches to teaching several subjects to elementary school students. The student has the answers, I merely guide or tweak those answers to get the correct expressions. There is always a way to explain a concept to get the underlying comprehension for everyone.

More About This Tutor...

Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.
I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.
