In high school, I tutored mathematics at Alexander Children's Center. Many of the children were abused at home, creating difficult challenges initially. However, I was able to work through some of these challenges by creating a calm and understanding environment, but also by establishing a routine. Today, I continue to volunteer at the Center as a basketball coach and can honestly say that I love working with children. While I was an undergraduate at Marshall University, I was asked by my thesis professor to help out in the tutoring center provided by the college of math. While I was there I helped students with their math courses ranging from college algebra to upper levels of calculus and differential equations. Being a learning disabled student myself, I have learned that not all students retain information the same. I feel this gives me an upper hand on techniques to get students to learn.
