A Little Bit About Me...

I believe all children deserve to be given the chance to learn. I understand that not everyone learns the same way; differentiated forms of instruction are an important part of the day to day teaching method. I find that I am patient with children, allowing them to work at their own speed, and encouraging them to work to the best of their abilities. I encourage a hands-on approach to learning: it’s more fun if you can get dirty! I also believe I have a sense of humor that helps me connect with children. I hope to provide all the help I can to enhance a child’s learning ability.
I have always known I wanted to work with children. I enjoy working in classrooms, as well as in the more relaxed settings, such as summer and after-school programs. I graduated in 2005 from the State University of New York at New Paltz with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, and a concentra ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I teach the way I counsel--by expecting self-responsibility. I use humor to enhance one's motivation to seek out and focus on one's strengths. I am not a coddler--I believe that higher expectations result in higher performance. When coupled with empathy, faith in the individual and strong foundations of skills, success is inevitable.
I have been supervising other counselors since 1997 in their report-writing. I take pride in my writing skills in the face of a field riddled with nurses who prefer abbreviations to beautifully executed coherent sentences. The sheer eloquence of being able to deliver a report allowing the reader to infer the true meaning of your words, while not providing any statements that will give fuel to a legal representative is a time-earned skill. In addition to my writing skills, I have 14 years of business skills, extensive analytical skills, which t ... read more

My love for teaching and working with children has allowed me to learn a variety of ways to help my students learn. Through the use of audio, visual and tactile manipulatives, my students have had some very exciting experiences and have succeeded in meeting the objectives set for them. I do believe in setting high expectations for each child and my experience has shown me that they rise to the occasion. My decision to become a pedagogue was due to the fact that I had wonderful teachers in my life who were supportive, kind and thoughtful. They inspired me to want to learn more and want to give more. I strive to make a difference in the life of my students also.

I believe that all children are born with great potential. My job, as a tutor, is to help young people achieve their best. I am patient, considerate and an excellent listener. I believe that once children recognize their own potential they will strive to succeed. A good educator can make a world of difference to a child. I strive to make a difference in all of my students' lives.
Since completing my BA in English (with a minor in Communication), I have been responsible for teaching children and adults in a variety of settings ranging from museums to the classroom. I also earned an MA in Public History and, as such, learned extensive grammatical skills and became a strong writer. I was a substitute teacher from my first year of college (99) to about 2005. I did all subject and all grades. I also worked at an out of school suspension program so the students still were learning and getting their work done. I also worked at the center of disability services helping and working with the disabled students in everyday school activities.
I like working in small groups and 1-on-1 is even better. I like to get to know them, become a friend/buddy with the student so they feel comfortable with me. In the past, with good and trouble students, this has worked and it seems like they don't want to let me down and that they do trust me and start trusting what I am telling them and enjoying it. I also like to show different little tricks to help to learn things and better understand things when fitting.

A Little Bit About Me...

Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. I have tutored secondary school students for the last 5 years in Math, Physics, and Chemistry.
I enjoy helping students understand the principles they are dealing with, rather than focusing on helping them simply "get the answer" to the problem at hand. My goal is for them to be able to generalize the concept and apply it in different contexts. To develop interest, I seek to discuss related information or similar problems as much as possible. For Physics in particular, this approach is key to providing a sound fou ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a guest lecturer several times at RPI. Due to work and family commitments I did not complete the degree. My wife and I homeschooled our children through the primary grades. I taught sciences. While an Employee at IBM, I wrote and taight technical courses. Physics is my forte and I love talking about and teaching the subject. I am especially helpfull to students challenged by word problems. Throughout college I would host study groups in Physics and Chemistry. I currently am a financial advisor.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. But I like to show that indeed, they use it all the time and that it can be fun. Learning should not only be effective, but enjoyable as well.
At my Ivy League college, we were taught not just facts, but how to learn. This invaluable skill has stood me well and put me in an excellent position to teach. I have continued ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked with Middle School age youth for almost a decade. I am Site Coordinator at an after school program & run a science focused club there. I also occasionally help the students who have been removed from our Homework Room with a number of subjects. I enjoy imparting my knowledge to my students via a variety of hands on learning activities and have always been a keen math, science and language arts student myself. Throughout school, I also played every woodwind instrument except the Oboe. While in college, I took every Agricultural Education class offered, as it is my intended area of post graduate study, and gained a grasp of educational psychology, classroom management and lesson planning.
I am a strong believer in mastering a topic as opposed to spitting out the correct response. I also believe in finding one’s main learning style and teaching to it, not that of the mas ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself. When I try to teach someone, I always explain to them the subject as basic and simple as possible. I give a few examples, and then help them figure it out themselves. When/ if they struggle, I will be there to help set them back on track.
I am finishing up my Bachelors degree in Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta- I will be graduated in December. I have been offered positions as a chemistry tutor but denied because of my other jobs. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.
