I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams
I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.

I like to nurture my students without enabling them. I tend to ask my students pointed questions about the subject at hand to inspire critical thinking and push them to arrive at their own interpretation of the correct answer. I feel that this best prepares them for college-level work.

I try to discern how the student I am tutoring learns best, whether it's by just doing examples, or visually by physically relating the material to something easier to understand. After I have found out how best to teach my student, I am able to move forward and help them to the best of my ability. In my tutoring experience, I have always been respectful and curteous to my students. A Little Bit About Me...

Working at the Nashville Transition Center, essentially a half-way house for children aged 12-18 with criminal and/or troubled backgrounds, my senior year of college changed my outlook on tutoring tremendously because it opened my eyes to the challenges many face. Having been born with Muscular Dystrophy, I'm certainly no stranger to challenges, however I had never seen individuals who were never really given a fair shot to succeed in my eyes.
