I have recently graduated from UNCW with a BS degree in chemistry. I have taken mainly math and science classes for the past three years. I have participated in many study groups and helped many other students who were in math and science classes by tutoring them.
I like to work through each type of problem step by step creating a blue print of what the student should be doing to solve each type of problem. I then repeat this with another problem of the same type. I like to go through every type of problem like this while they write the steps of how to do the problem down and then try to solve each problem step by step. I like to emphasize that they write neatly so they can see clearly what they are doing and what they have done so they can quickly go back through the problem and check for mistakes.

I received my BS in Biology from UNCW and for the last 15 years I have been an Environmental Chemist. Now, I am pursuing my true calling as an educator. It was a regular part of my job to teach and train new grad students and employees and also to do community outreach. In mathematics, I was taught early on that in order to prove something you need three things: 1. facts that are obvious/self-evident 2. relate them in a logical way 3. frame these facts and their relationships inside of a theory Engineering is just applied mathematics. I believe that anyone can do it, at their level; the key for an educator is to have sufficient people skills to diagnose the problem areas a given student might have and then address those in the context of solving a given problem.
During my time at NC State, I worked at the mathematics laboratory for two years. In that short amount of time, I learned as much as I taught. The experience of communicating technical information in a way that is accessible requires a set of skills that, in my humble opinion, will always be in demand.

A Little Bit About Me...

At North Carolina State University, I was a teacher assistant for two years, explaining to the students how computers and intel assembly work. After I received my Bachelors, I was in University of North Carolina -- Wilmington's Watson School Program for a little over one semester, gaining field experiences in both becoming a teacher and a tutor. The different sets of experiences should prove valuable to me.
My personal approach to teaching varies between student and student, situation and situation. Generally, I make sure I understand the specific lesson the student has to learn, and then ask them building block questions to make them come up with the answer. This is similar to AVID training, where the answers have to come from questioning each other. If technology is around, I prefer to also use that to explain the problems.
