A Little Bit About Me...

My style is relaxed. Many students appear frightened of math at first. I cover each subject well, allowing students to ask many questions. I encourage students to work problems while I watch, so I can catch them at the moment they make a mistake. I love teaching students of all ages, in basic math, algebra, statistics, and calculus. I have gotten feedback from students, indicating how much they appreciated my instruction... living for seeing the light come on in a student's eyes.
As a psychology major, at the beginning of my education, I discovered that I had a love and talent for mathematics. Thus I pursued a dual degree in Psychology and Math. While at Humboldt State, I completed the College Faculty Preparation Program. This program significantly improved my teaching pedagogy. With regards to tutoring, I feel that it is extremely important to understand and draw on the student’s learning style. As a kinesthetic learner, I frequently promote tactile learning while also introducing elements of visual, auditory, and/or reading/writing exercises, depending on what works best for the student. I’m patient and considerate but feel that it is important to set high expectations for each of my students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I worked for a program called CalSoap (College Knowledge). The program had us working in classrooms, at a local highschool, helping the teachers with tutoring the students. I worked in an algebra 2 and geometry class as well as did lunch and after school tutoring. I also tutored 1st graders when I was in 6th grade in reading skills.
I love being able to help children better understand their material. That is the best part of being a tutor or teacher because you get to see the light bulb finally go off when the child understands it and the joy they feel. When I tutor I do not just give the child the answer I constantly ask them what they think the next step is or how they would go about starting the problem. My math teaching experience has been primarily with students who didn't "get it" when they first took classes at a particular level of mathematics. My focus has been to take the material and translate it from the often-impenetrable form found in textbooks to a more accessible, practical presentation. I prefer to characterize mathematics as a language skill where, as in most language classes, exposure to a idea should be followed by enough repeated practice to develop a confidence in its implementation. This is a method used successfully in many other countries whose students consistently outperform U.S. students.

I worked at the Tutoring Club in Folsom, CA for 1 year. I tutored a variety of age groups, mostly high school age, in mathematics up through calculus, chemistry, biology and physics. I also worked at the learning center through Humboldt State University for about a year. Other than that, I have had multiple students for private tutoring sessions since 2005. So I have about 4 years experience in tutoring overall. I obtained 5 associates degrees from American River College in May 2007. They include AS in mathematics, math/science and general science with AA in liberal arts and general education transfer.
