Tutor - Writing, Reading, GED Prep

I worked for two years at the Cleveland State University Writing Center where I tutored writing and reading comprehension to undergraduate and graduate students of many academic backgrounds. I tutored students one-on-one and also taught writing workshops to groups of 3-6 students. In February of 2013, I began tutoring GED prep at Seeds of Literacy, an adult education organization in Cleveland. I am comfortable tutoring most topics covered on the test. If there is a topic I am unsure about, I will let you know up front. I am also certified to be a foster parent and subsequently possess well-rounded knowledge concerning the learning needs of children and young adults of varying abilities and learning styles.
My teaching style is patient, relaxed, and supportive. I tend to tailor my methods to the needs and personality of the student.

Coming from a Hungarian background, I have always been in tune to language and I have been influenced in many ways by my mother, a native of Hungary, and teachers throughout the years. I hold a bachelor's degree in English from Ohio University, and I volunteered as a literacy tutor and copy editor/reporter for The Post, a newspaper on campus. As an editorial intern for Cleveland Magazine, I have enjoyed writing articles about many subjects. I have enjoyed my studies so much that I would love to continue teaching others what I know and how to improve their own work.

To me, the most important thing is to be a good listener. I usually like to spend the first 5 to 10 minutes with a new student just chatting about their academic life and their study habits. It also helps the student feel mor ... read more

My teaching style is a “hands on” approach. I like to find out what the student already knows about the subject. I then like to fill in the missing links for the student in a fun, and interactive manner. I discuss any questions that the student has about the material after the initial information is given. I complete the process by going over examples and looking at work that they have completed in the past to show he student how to employ the skills that I taught during the lesson.

I love teaching and working with students. I feel that there is a way to educate and student, no mare how severe his/her problems, so long as I, the tutor, am willing to adjust my teaching style to his/her personality and/or learning problem. All struggling students can fulfill their educational goals so long as they are willing to put for the effort required and I as their tutor am there to guide them. Seeing this transition occur, from struggling to confident, in my previous experience has made teaching extremely fulfilling.

My style of teaching is one based on the importance of engaging the student in learning. I like to present them with examples of good craft, be it writing or sleight of hand, and then helping them come to the conclusion that a given piece of work needs improvement on their own. Furthermore, I feel it is important to have them fully understand and internalize why the improved version is superior. A light approach, with lots of humor and gentle guidance, has served me well both as an entertainer and teacher.
