An understanding tutor

The teaching style that I have always promoted is to recognize that everyone learns on a different level and at a different pace. Therefore, a step by step instructor is needed and that instructor has to know how to meet that individual needs based on what they know not what I know. You find alot of college professors teach lessons based on what they know and their experience not realizing that the some students learn at different paces. I experienced this as both an undergraduate and graduate student but I had to go through it or drop the class.

I believe that teaching should be a collaborative process. The first step is to listen to the child and try to gain a sense of their own learning process. If you understand how the child learns, you will be better able to help him or her understand new concepts. I believe tutoring is invaluable in this regard, since it provides individual attention.
