I am a pre-med student at MTSU, and I will be graduating with a second degree in Science this year. I have experience tutoring grade school students in math and reading subjects. I also have experience teaching college students in science subjects. Before attending MTSU, I was a professional ballroom dancer and instructor for five years. I have experience teaching ballroom dancing to children as young as five and adults as young as 70!
I am a believer in learning and understanding concepts and principles of the subject being studied. Asking why and how we come to a conclusion rather than memorizing or mindlessly going through steps generates long term success. I believe that successful tutoring begins with establishing a relationship with the tutee. Once I have an idea of his/her personality and learning style, I adjust my tutoring methods to fit the needs of that particular tutee. So for example, if a student is an auditory learner I try to involve more tutoring processes in which he/she listens in order to learn the information. However, generally speaking there are two heuristic practices that I like to follow. The first is to talk as a little as possible in order to allow the tutee to guide the flow of the session.
