My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : Published primarily in Poetry

I am an 15 year IT professional, the last 3 with the University of Iowa. I also have 6 years of chemical/biologincal operations and technical writing experience with Abbott Laboratories and SC Johnson Wax. Schooling includes a BS in Business/MIS with a minor in English and an MBA with concentration in International Business and Finanace. I am preparing to begin a PhD program in Business, and have scored a GMAT of 770 in 2005 and a GRE of 1330 in 2010.
My primary goal is to help students understand the "why" of studies. "Why" do we look for differentials in calculus? "Why" do we describe imagery in poetry instead of just saying how we feel? Most of my experience stems from my Bachelor of Arts degree at Wartburg College, Waverly, IA. As a Biology major, I have a good background in Life Sciences and Math. I have several study techniques that helped me succeed in college, as well as my current career as a Scientist Integrated DNA technologies in Coralville, IA. I have worked with students of many different backgrounds, ages, and abilities. I love to help a student find that "a-ha" moment where he or she finally understands a concept that has been a struggle. I enjoy teaching new concepts or working with students to master a concept.

As an ESL, grades 9-12 teacher, I am very familiar with identifying students' individual strengths and areas in need of support. Every one of my students learns differently. I must design curriculum that can be easily differentiated. This makes me an excellent tutor, because this is what it takes to tutor. As a college student, I tutored many other graduate students that were attaining their degrees in this country and needed to hone their English language skills before returning to their home nations.
