As a student, I am driven to understand the nature of things. As a teacher, I work to help others understand them. From my experience, I have learned to be patient with people who are afraid of failure and to push students who are easily bored with basic work. I have earned a bachelor's degree in computer science because computers are the tool with the most potential to enable us to understand the world, second only to the mind. To this end, I encourage my students to think long and hard about the problem they want to solve before they put too much work on a false lead. My philosophy of teaching is to train the student to think like a scientist and/or mathematician. It is not just about getting the right answer but rather understanding the fundamental principals of a subject. This enables the student to try previously unseen problems and succeed. I also believe in varying the techniques used. If a student has trouble with their teacher or text books approach, a different method should be explored. Imparting true understanding is a satisfying experience that I always aim for.
