I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I think that a through understanding in any subject comes about when a student can recognize the important concepts, and how they relate to each other, and speak those concepts in words which they understand--while gaining the vocabulary and proficiency as each subject demands. As an elementary teacher I taught all subjects except science. A Little Bit About Me...

The biggest motivation of my teaching career is to hold a high standard of expectation. I have a MA in Special Education, and a BA in Business Administration. I am adding to my teaching certificate an additional endorsement in middle level and high school math. I have home schooled all four of my children. Teaching strategies which have worked for me in the classroom include cooperative learning groups that encourage social interaction, as well as, jigsaw groups. The use of PowerPoint presentations to illustrate the material utilizes a technology component which I find useful. Strategies for special needs students would include making sure to see if they are a visual, auditory, or sensory learner and teach to those senses. I would need to tailor my lesson plans by making the information more interactive for students who have special needs or are English language learners to make sure that they are learning the information. I would have more cooperative group activities and hands-on tasks that the students could engage in, such as a webquest activity in the computer lab. Graphic organizers are always good tools to use.
