I am fascinated with the concept that the more senses you utilize in teaching the better the child learns and retains what was taught. Some children respond to verbal teaching, while others prefer visual teaching, or others like to interact with their environment (the hands on approach). Each child has their own language. I believe that a teacher must do whatever is necessary to reach the student so that he can learn. Learning should be fun and enjoyable! In my experience, fear and self-consciousness interfere the most with learning. This seems especially true of arithmetic and higher levels of math. I don't believe that children should force themselves to memorize something they don't understand just to please a teacher. It is my job to find a way to make it clear. My first experience as a tutor was in my college tutor lab. I tutored both college level Math and Chemistry. I found that students I tutored found it easier to understand complex concepts when their individual needs could be addressed one on one. If a student does not understand a concept the first way I explain it we try again a different way, but if they do understand we can move on and not waste their time.
