Never stop pushing yourself to learn

I have taught a large array of children and adults, anywhere from a 2nd grader struggling with reading to adult Burmese refugees. I have the patience and flexibility to successfully work with anyone. I started tutoring when I was around the age of 13. I taught a young Korean girl English, where I would have to create my own lesson plans. While I attended Okemos high school, I partook in volunteering experiences that dealt with tutoring. My teaching style is very interactive. I like to begin a tutoring session by helping the student set a goal for the session. We then begin work on the material. During the session I encourage the student's learning by asking open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking. With writing assignments, the pen is always in the student's hand and, with guidance, the student makes choices about his or her writing. I use a method I call guided discovery, which encourages students to think in depth about their subject, discovering new methods and information with guidance from me.
