I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach. I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment. I tend to push students to work hard and challenge them to think about the process instead of just giving answers.

When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. In both situations, I try to find which learning styles work best for the student and present lessons based on those. Each person has a unique way of learning, and if a teacher takes the time to understand it, then the student's true potential can be reached.
