I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. If my student is confused about where to put the punctuation in a quotation, we will do several real world scenerios where he will write statements, questions, and exclaimations correcting as we go along. I believe all students have the ability to learn. It is my job as the teacher to find out what makes a student "click". I have learned through my experiences that connecting subject matter to a student's interests will ensure the student learns. All students need to feel successful! I have 30 years experience in Elementary Education. I have taught grades 2-8 in a self-contained and block scheduled school. I served as Asst.
