Every Moment Can Be a Teachable Moment

This fall, I begin my twentieth year as a teacher. I'm still teaching because I'm still curious myself about the world around us, and sharing that passion, curiosity, and drive to know is part of my classroom every day. Showing learners the path to success is not just my vocation--it's an avocation. I've taught at high schools in Texas and Virginia, and have worked with students of all abilities: remediation and review classes, general, academic, honors, advanced placement, and advanced placement for gifted students. The courses I've taught include ESL English language, and reading, science, social studies, and math for ESL; Earth Science; Sat Verbal and SAT Writing; high school English for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades; AP Language and Composition; AP Literature and Composition; Creative Writing; Practical Writing; and, Science Fiction. My comments on tutoring Poetry : Able to tutor/teach all elements of Poetry.

I have over of 30 years of progressive experience in tutoring young children in the elementary years of education in all subject matter areas. My specialty is literacy and reading, but I am also adept in teaching all of the math curricula as well. I also firmly believe that teaching organizational skills and proper research methodologies are very important for the classroom today--and every child needs these skills in order to excel in the classroom and survive. I am also a qualified art teacher in the NOVA area.
I believe in tutoring so that the child receives feedback and fully understands his/her own limitations and how to overcome obstacles in class. Many children lack positivity in the methodology! I also believe that using art instruction helps children to learn in a more creative manner.

More About This Tutor...

I taught in the Wright City RII School District for 26 years, at both high school and middle school level. During that time I taught everything from English and American literature to basic grammar and writing skills. I also taught some reading classes. I have extensive experience in writing research papers and strong skills in grammar and punctuation. I was an assistant principal for two years, and helped develop a reading program for the middle school. As a professional teacher tutoring students was an essential part of ensuring success for many of my students.
I believe all children can learn. A good teacher tries to find each child's individual learning style and accomodate lessons to match it. I also think learning should be fun, so I use a lot of games and other incentives. I am patient, have a good sense of humor, and have age and the experience of being the mother o ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is that of an energetic and enthusiastic mentor. I listen allot, work very heard to establish rapport and trust, and work with them where they need the help. I convey my own love of learning and how important reading comprehension, writing skills, tha ability to convey one's self in both writing and speech is, and how much they will need these skills to get ahead in life. I try to "partner" with them to help them to move forward. I try to help my students realize accomplishment, however small, at each step of the way. Empowerment is what many students need. They need someone to believe in THEM. I do that well and make myself available for help - day or night. I am only a phone call away.
I am an energetic, articulate, and enthusiastic tutor. I have the ability to teach, motivate, & empower my students. Although I taught Speech, English, and Broadcast ... read more

I am the first college graduate in my family. In the last 18 years, I earned an Associate's Degree and a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics with a minor in Spanish. During my studies in Linguistics, I concentrated on language acquisition, phonology, and grammar and syntax. In 2010, I earned a Master's in Education with a concentration in teaching ESL. My degree in Education has allowed me to research various methods in teaching and how to best convey information to my students. I have taught K-12 ESL, Restaurant ESL, ESL for office jobs, ESL for medical jobs. I also teach Intermediate and Advanced Reading/Writing, which takes students from a basic paragraph to writing various forms of essays.
