My comments on tutoring Algebra : I consistently made mostly "A" averages in Algebra I, and scored well in this subject throughout K-12, as well as college.

I like to use the Socratic method, mainly by asking questions and challenging assumptions. In addition, I like to engage those I teach, challenging them to think about what they previously have not considered. I believe in building on successes, and offering constructive criticism, where appropriate.
I have mentored various people since 2000, in all types of subjects, including math, science, social sciences, English, writing, literature, and other related subjects. My academic record is very strong, and I believe empowering those I work with every single time. The only pre-requisites are that you have to be willing to learn, and learn how to learn.

I will teach what algebra is really about in five hours, the basics. In engineering, a common phrase is KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Give Algebra l a KISS, get all the basics in the book upfront, and do sample problems in each section of the book. You will then understand all the daily mumbo-jumbo of Algebra l, and just need to do more of the assigned practice problems. But you will already know how to do the problems, and why.
35 years of Engineering Experience. Graduate Engineer with Math beyond Calculus lll; however, flunked my 9th grade algebra class. I didn't get it. I have taught both my children Algebra l in only five hours before taking the class, and they both got "A's". I'm not a teacher, but just a parent who didn't get Algebra l, but understand why I didn't get it, and now know how to teach kids how to simply get it. This method also helped my children get "A's ... read more

I am a discussion based teacher. I prefer to engage the students higher level thinking with a questioning approach. I do not think that lecture or rote memorization are proper ways to educate a child. I believe that teachers affect a students learning not just through the subject but also through the real world examples that should be the core of all learning. Students will only reach their potential when they are challenged beyond what they feel they are capable.
I am blessed to have attended a college that prepared me for real world situations and classroom circumstances. I have achieved two bachelor's degrees, a BS in bible and a BS in elementary education. I have also achieved a master's in holistic education. These degree programs provided me with a grasp of all subject areas in the elementary portion of schooling. I have also had the pleasure of tutoring many athletes ... read more

I have a somewhat relaxed teaching style that does not compromise the distinction or respect between student and teacher. This teaching style results in a classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable responding to my questions and asking for further clarification about complex topics. Many students have told me that my teaching style is refreshing and they feel comfortable in class.
With my numerous experiences in education, I think I could be a great asset in helping students become more knowledgeable. I have worked as a Tutor, Assistant Teacher, and did a short placement as an Interim Teacher. I can easily adjust to changing environments that will best suit the student’s potential. I was a Tutor in an after school program, and was an Assistant Teacher in a Special Education classroom. I finished an Interim Teaching placement in a middle school A.P. English classroom.

Coming from a family with no prior college education, I made it a point to not only graduate from a four-year university but to work as hard as I could to be the best at what I do. I accomplished what I have set out to do by graduating with a degree at both institutes I attended with a GPA above 3.0. I have tutored my younger brother for several years in the four major subjects. I also worked in high school as a teaching aid for a 4th grade class at Jefferson Elementary School and actually taught math and science to the class. As part of the Jefferson County High Science Club, I volunteered for different workshops for kids that showed them the wonders of science.
I like to accommodate to a child's personality and likes to help them to learn through distinct processes. When given the opportunity in the correct manner, children can learn most of what is put in front of them. By using ... read more

I love teaching and tutoring children of all ages. Although I have only formally been tutoring for about 6 years, I was a tutor all through my childhood helping other children learn when I finished with my classwork. Since first grade I have always wanted to be a teacher, although my brain tried to steer me in a different direction in college. Yet, my heart brought me back to teaching. I am very considerate of every child no matter their weakness; however I play close attention to their strenghts and play off those strenghts in the classroom. I believe every child has a desire to learn deep within them, some just have to remember how good it feels to learn, especially when he or she has tried so hard.

My goal in attending the University of Tennessee was initially for the purpose of doing research; this led me to pursue a BS in BCMB.I began volunteering with middle school, high school, and college students at my church in 2005,which revealed to me my love of working with students this age.Over the past five years, I have tutored students in math and science, from fifth grade math to college-level chemistry. I find that there is something fascinating that we encounter on a daily basis. I enjoy bringing those events to light, and fostering student interest in the world around us. Whether it is a physical phenomenon, an inquiry into a scientific question, or a piece of literature, I believe that the relationship that is developed between the material and the learner is the tool through which real learning occurs. It is my goal to garner curiosity, present knowledge and provide insight so that students may govern their own thought process to learning. I believe that this is what leads to true education, and not simply the memorization of facts.
Since a child, I have always been curious of the world around me. My interests culminated with the completion of two degrees in the natural sciences. I consider myself a true inter-disciplinarian, supplementing both my degrees with courses in appli ... read more

I was determined to be the first to attend and graduate from college out of a big family. I have learned different aspects of Psychology to apply to everyday life. In the last 10 years, I have been working with troubled teens to help them get their lives back on track. I have also done some tutoring in between.
Working with different age groups, have shown me that every child is their own individual. I get to know the children I work with to understand the best approach to take with them. I can work in small groups, large groups, or individual. Some children are shy and may work better alone. It takes patience to teach and I am blessed to have that gift.

I strive to show students how the subject matter is relevant to them and help them see the benefit derived from mastering a subject area. I try to analyze the student's learning style and their current weaknesses in order to tailor the instruction to meet their needs. I believe I am patient and respectful. My teaching style is informal and friendly. I have numerous years as an AWANA teacher of children at church in addition to one year experience as a professional chemistry teacher. A prior supervisor of my teaching style said "a natural teacher that immediately puts the students at ease".
My experience starts as a chemist in the nuclear industry, then proceeding to an environmental professional in the manufacturing industry, and finally as an adjunct professor of law for a distance education university.
