Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I started tutoring in my teens helping young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders develop English and Math skills as well as speech therapy and public speaking. I tutored my fellow students while attending Carroll Community College in English 101 and 102 as well as Creative Writing. I then moved on to being a one on one with high school students with special needs in the Baltimore area.
I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically learn, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. My teaching style varies, depending on what the individual student needs, but it is always driven by an enthusiasm and verve for education (particularly in science) that I have been told is infectious (not a great thing to say to a biologist, but it's the thought that counts). Learning is most effective when the learner understands the importance of the material to their interests and the world around them. As such, one of my priorities when teaching is finding the relevance of the subject to the student and examining the concepts in the student's context.
